These images are part of a series called Sunpath paintings, 40 in total. Medium is acrylic and guache. and measure 18" x 24". $650 each
The paintings explore sun symbolism; it's form and function as myth, as calendars, and as imagery pertaining to the Latvian Sun Songs(Dainas). The images are reasearched and collected from pre-city-state Northern European and Baltic Cultures. Most are rock/cave carvings and paintings, some are from birchbark, ceramic utensils or jewelry. My intent, as an artist, is to interpret my scholarly research of Sun Dainas by examining the pr-city-state paradigm, and, hopefully, showthat the Sun Dainas are older than the language in which they are written.
My serious work in Dainas began in1985, when I was invited to illustratethe Latvian Sun Songs by Vaira Vike-Freiberga and her husband,Imants.Ms. Freibergs is currently the President of Latvia, and is well known for her contributions to Psychology, Ethnology and Folklore. Mr. Freibergs is a computer specialist and created the data base for the roughly 2 million existing Latvian Dainas.
Since then I've continued my Daina analysis studies with other Latvian ethnology specialists, as well as intensive self-study, mythology, anthropology, psychology, theology and metaphysics. Although the intellectual pursuit of knowledge is fun, the real excitement is in having the artist's creative & experiential lens through which to view the information. It is this lens,I feel, that will shed needed light on the mysterious meaning of the thisancient solar paradigm. |
